Managing Your Summer Break

The simplest way to manage your plot through the most productive months in the year is not to take a holiday in the summer! This is the route taken by hardened allotment-holders and the one I use myself. If you book a summer holiday, finding the perfect plot-sitter is the best alternative to being there yourself. Assuming you can’t get somebody to manage your plot while you’re away, planning your crops to fit in around your summer break can help make your holiday a relaxing one, and ensure that you don’t come home to an allotment that looks like a jungle.

There are two kinds of crops that are ready to be harvested in summer: the ones that can be left for a while without harm, and the ones that either spoil if left, or set seed, meaning that the parent plant puts its energy into seed production rather than into growing the part of the plant we choose to eat. If you simply must take a summer break, you want the former kind of crop on your plot.
